ART BY EENURGL

SPECIES Vampire
||
A vampire; immortal being; unable to die unless killed by a specific ways. Creatures of night, whose eternal thirst is only sated by drinking human blood.

Not a lot of vampires are left these days. Some blame the low number on vampire hunters, however the biggest mortality rate comes from suicides of those vampires that couldn't bear a though of living forever; or a death of their loved one.

Vampires body temperature is low; staying at room temperature unless outside; where during winters it can drop near 10 Celsius. Their heart doesn't beat, they don't need to breathe (even though it's habit to many) and their blood doesn't flow. Vampire blood is thicker than human one; it barely bleeds from small cuts; and it's a bit darker than the normal blood.

Vampires are also sterile; unable to sire or bear children, so if they desire a children of their own, adoption is their only option.

Turning a human into a vampire is quite a simple thing to do; on paper at least. In reality however turning goes rarely as well as one would imagine.

First the victim must be drained and close to death, which in itself is tricky business. Not close enough to death means the turning won't work and the vampire's blood will just offer the victim a very nasty death. Too close to death means that victim dies before they turn to vampire.
However, if the time is right when the vampire makes the victim drink his own blood there is a chance they will turn into a vampire. Human will be in a coma-like state for couple of days (2-3 days is most common, but it's not unheard to 'stay under' longer). If they wake up, they will be  a vampire, if not.. well, they are dead.

Sire and childe does share a minor connection between them. Sire cannot order his childe around and force them to do what ever they want, the connection is more like these subconscious little feelings you sometimes get. Both sire and childe can feel if the other one is alive, can feel if they die. Strongly bonded ones may even know is another one far or close; even the way (north/south etc). However, only the sire can close the connection if they so wish, however it's considered rude and neglectful.

APPEARANCE

FROZEN IN TIME

⋗ Once upon a time Klaue was quite a beautiful sight, filled with boyish charm and androgynous features. And as it was, he knew how to use his beauty to his full advantage. It was that beauty, that got frozen in time when he became immortal.

⋗ Klaue is around 171 cm tall (5'7 ft). While he was slightly taller than average in his time, in modern day's standards he's a bit below average in height. Also, because of his slim statue he's at the lower end of normal weight for a man of his height.

His body shape can be described as inverted triangle, with wider shoulders and narrow hips. Klaue has long legs and arms; making him look almost lanky and clumsy, if not for his trained elegance in his movements. His movements are usually calm and collected, but gaze predatory in their intensity.

⋗ As most vampires, Klaue's skin is quite pale, almost sickly grey. In warm or dim light this wouldn't be so noticeable, but under a bright fluorescent light it can look quite startling. His skin, however, isn't the only notable feature he shares with most vampires. His ears are sharp, and so are his black claw-like nails. Nails, that Klaue files a bit duller, for convenience's sake.

The most vampire-like quality Klaue has, is his eyes. His eyes are narrow and upturned. Right one has a red iris and sharp pupil, but the injured side is missing the outer lids and after going blind, the color has changed to this milky white color. However, because of his startling injuries and dim light Klaue often resides, his unnatural features go often unnoticed.

⋗ Because of his injury, left side of his hair have multiple strands of graying hair. Hair on that side also grows straight, where as the healthy side still creates natural waviness and the stark charcoal black color.

Almost half of left side of his face is covered in scar tissue and almost exposed muscle from burns he suffered earlier in his life. Burns are bad enough near his mouth, that you can see the exposed teeth and gum partly. Those burns continue down his neck, past his chest, ending a bit above his hips. Left hand is completely covered in the burns.

In the burned areas there are barely any nerves left, so his sense of feeling there is limited, if not missing completely. Especially the edges of the burns are however painful almost all the time, and has led Klaue self medicating the pain away more often than not.

Sometimes anger burned worse
than the fire ever did

PERSONALITY

BELIEVABLE LIE

Angry & Scared

Once upon a time Klaue used to be kind and polite. Coy and perhaps a tad arrogant. This didn't change a much as he became a vampire. He still flirted freely, and smiled to strangers, even tough his life had changed a lot in the last decade. However, since vampire that had changed Klaue (in an accident,- she hadn't expected Klaue to fight back, wiry thing he was) hadn't wanted anything to do with him, Klaue had to figure things out himself. What to consume when he felts like dying to thirst and stomach gnawing no matter what he ate or drank - how to eventually drink blood without killing his victims; every number a shameful collar around his neck.

Young and arrogant. On top of the world - or so did he think. You see, while the vampires might prowl around in the night, the real danger awaited during the day. Klaue might not have been the most notorious vampire around the city; he had a few deaths on his name; but all of those were from the early years when he still learned control. After, he took only what he needed, and while most didn't consent specifically for some bloodletting they still shared his bed willingly and woke up the following morning healthy, if not a bit dizzy or disorientated.

But a killer is always a killer, or so did the group of hunters think. They were new in the job as well; careless enough for Klaue to survive, but not without extensive wounds. You see, they didn't stay and make sure Klaue died, no. They just staked him down; missed the heart, but why to do it again when the vampire would burn anyway with the sun high above their heads. And so Klaue burned, and so did his newfound hatred.
Perhaps for the worse, Klaue never found the young hunters that disfigured him. He never got his revenge, and now those flames just keep climbing higher up.

Klaue is arrogant no more.

These days there is this restless energy inside Klaue. His eyes flicker from window to window, from door to door, almost if expecting something to happen. His gaze settles heavy upon others, like a beast looking for nervousness to pounce on. Klaue learned his lesson about trust and perceptiveness, and that lesson stays with him to this day.

There are days when Klaue finds some peace from his heavy, sharp thoughts. Almost jovial, one could describe him; with slight smiles and soft eyes. Other days, the anger burns trough him as he once burned and he lashes out. Sometimes his scars hurt enough for Klaue to prowl the streets, searching for a fight to dull the pain. Sometimes that relief is found from elsewhere. Sometimes, simply a trusted company is enough to pacify him for a while. However, the resentful anger will always be part of him. Every reflection from the mirror or the window is enough to darken his toughs, which is one of the reasons why there is no mirrors in his home, every window is covered with heavy drapes, and usually reflective surfaces have matte finishes.

It's not everyone that Klaue hates, he's not so far gone. He doesn't hate the children, even though they flinch away from him. He might hate the other vampires, resents his sire for killing him - for leaving him, - for making him a monster; but sometimes he can look past it. But the rest are more complicated. You see, there are a few types of humans Klaue has met. There are those that simple live their own lives, in their own little bubbles and their lives never touch Klaue's unless they happen to catch his eye for one reason or another. And then there is those that make their business Klaue's business. Those he dislikes. The amount varies, of course. But the worst offenders will always be the hunters. There is not a single one whom doesn't make Klaue want to scream and tear them apart. How his blood boils and anger rages and it feels almost as he's being torn apart. To those, he has no sympathy, nothing more than deadly intent even if they aren't the original group that wronged him the first time.

He is afraid.

Despite of his anger, his fear, Klaue is a social creature. He was like that when he was alive, but after the death as well. He never did well in isolation and loneliness; when the walls started closing in. However it's hard to be social when some days it's hard to move around, it's hard to be social when they age and he doesn't, - or perhaps the worst; when people shy away out of fear of disgusts. One might think he had time to get used to it, but for Klaue it gets worse a decade after decade. Those are the worst days; not the ones when his scars pain him, but the ones where he is a one wrong glance away from breaking even more.

To his close friends, he is gentle, he is loyal. Sometimes gentleness might be forced; but he makes the attempt, even if his day is horrible. He enjoys doing things together - but also enjoys just talking or basking in their presence. It's then he lets his shield crack, it's then he lets himself relax a bit.

He buries them deep inside his chest, and when they leave all that is left is a bloody gaping hole.

VAMPIRISM

LIFE ; ETERNAL

Being a vampire comes with certain strengths and weaknesses which may vary a bit with every vampire.

▸Supernatural strength, speed and endurance - Every vampire is physically stronger and faster than a human, however the amount varies. They can also take far stronger hits than human. These are few things that doesn't change older the vampire gets and is more effected by vampire's human life. If they were weightlifters then they are probably stronger compared to usual vampires (etc.)

▸Supernatural senses - As with above, vampires' senses are quite a bit better than their human counterparts and the senses doesn't become better as they age. However unlike with strength, speed and endurance, it's a lot more uncommon to meet another vampire with abnormally good senses compared to other vampires. For example a normal vampire can hear a heartbeat from humans in the same room and even sometimes from rooms next to. As you can imagine you can use their heightened senses against them. Vampires doesn't need to breathe, however some of them does it to keep appearances or from the cheer enjoyment of it. In Klaue's case his vision and hearing has been damaged, and thus those senses are weaker than your normal vampires, however to compensate this his sense of smell is quite good.

▸ Supernatural healing - As you can assume; vampires heals faster than humans, even whole body-parts as they get older. Wounds similar to paper cuts disappears in minutes, stab wounds from a day to two, but larger body-parts can take up to weeks to regenerate and heal. However to keep this healing up they need a lot of blood, since it burns trough their energy fast. Wounds made by sunlight or fire does not heal very well if at all.

▸Slight mind control/manipulation - Vampires can influence unguarded minds. They cannot make a man of peace to wage a war, but they can make absent-minded person to forget small things, they can make a tired person to decide to fall asleep; and so on. This power can become stronger with experience and time.

▸Immortality - Cannot die to old age or sicknesses. Currently the only known (sure) way to get vampire killed is to either burn them to dust with fire or sunlight, or destroy their hearts; be it high caliber bullet or a stake, it matters not.

▸Aversion to sunlight & fire - Sunlight is quite deadly to vampires. As soon as vampire's skin gets to direct sunlight it starts to blister and burn and won't stop until they get out of the sunlight. However burning up in a sunlight is not a quick death. It can take anywhere from ten minute to even hours - and all of those minutes are agonizing.

▸Aversion to silver - While silver is not truly deathly to vampires, it does surely hurt them. Pure silver can even burn vampires trough gloves. If silver gets into their bloodstream it spreads quickly with horrible, paralyzing pain which takes hours to days to stop.
Vampires slight aversion to mirrors comes from 19th century practice of using silver as a bottom coat to mirrors; silver doesn't mirror vampire's image and hence they didn't show in mirrors. However today sputtering aluminum or other compounds is more often used for this purpose, hence vampires showing in them normally

In the days that turned to dust

I couldn't love so I would run for lust

I couldn't feel so I would touch

A sea of flesh but it was never enough

Vampires needs blood to stay strong and functioning. Vampires cannot die to starvation, however if they go long enough without drinking blood, they will enter a starved out state, compared to coma - which they won't wake up until they get blood. However this takes time; even years.
Normal vampires needs minimum two deciliters blood either every week, or every other week for the hunger not to affect them badly. Older the vampire is, longer they can go without blood, but longer they go the more they need when they finally drink.

After these first weeks, vampires starts feeling hungry, then they start to weaken. For a normal vampire; if they go around 1.5 - 2 months without blood they start to show some feral behavior. It's their bodies way of ensuring their well-being. During this phase there is pretty much no speaking vampire down until they get their fix.

Fresh human blood is the most delicious and effective way to keep the hunger away and powers intact. Then comes the bagged human blood; it doesn't taste as good, but otherwise has same effect as fresh blood. One cannot drink only animal blood; it'll end up same way as simple starvation, however it'll just take longer to get there. It also doesn't taste as good; compared to fresh human blood it's like comparing professional 5 star chef's dinner to McDonald's hamburger. It goes from time to time but you're not there to enjoy it's taste.

More thirsty vampire is, it'll show in their appearance. Usually it's quite hard to outwardly see who is vampire and who's not. Vampires are naturally very pale; from not getting any sunlight, but also because their blood is not there to give you that healthy pink-ish hue. Younger vampires are not as pale as the older ones.
Then there is of course the teeth; not only the upper canines are sharp, but so are fangs next to them; perfect for tearing and maiming.
Hungrier the vampire is, more blown out their pupils become, until all you can see is the pure black; no color to be seen which also often happens during drinking blood from a living subject.

Vampires can eat and drink human foods and it will taste normal, however it won't nourish them at all. While you can still feel full; your thirst is not disappearing anywhere, or even easing at all.
